Fig. 1. Inflammatory mediators and innate immune responses during COVID-19 infection. Patients with severe COVID-19 exhibit high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, causing a cytokine storm and collateral tissue damages in the late phase. Innate immune cells in severe COVID-19 have the prominent feature of higher gene expression of inflammatory mediators and impaired responses to subsequent stimuli.
